How to Choose a Home Security System

Packages and equipment: Home security providers vary in the home security packages and equipment they offer. It’s important to investigate the exact equipment you want before purchasing a system.

Cost: You’ll want to make sure that the cost of equipment, monthly monitoring service, and professional installation vs DIY installation options are within your budget.

Reputation: Some companies have better reputations than others. You won’t want to work with a company that has a track record of disappointing customer service. Talking to friends and family and reading reviews can help you learn about a company’s reputation.

Smart home integration: If you enjoy using smart home devices and want to sync technology like your thermostat, lights, door locks and cameras with your home security system, look for offerings that support smart home integration.

2 Types of Home Security Systems

Professionally
Installed Security
System

The primary benefits of professional installation are that it comes with technical expertise and requires no work on your part. If you choose professional installation, an expert will be on hand to set up your security cameras, door/window sensors, motion detectors, and any additional equipment you select. It may look easy to install yourself, but without home security knowledge, you could install them in a way that creates blind spots and leaves your home vulnerable. With professional installation, an expert will conduct a security assessment, walk you through the ins and outs of your system, troubleshoot equipment problems, and allow you to ask questions in real time. Some companies require professional installation, while others give you the choice of professional or DIY installation. While professional installation often comes with a long-term contract, the commitment can mean lower upfront equipment costs compared to the DIY installation product.

2 Types of Home Security Systems

Professionally Monitored or Self
Monitored – Un-Monitored

Professional
Monitored

Company-monitored security systems are controlled and operated by professional organizations and personnel. While systems have different features and manufacturers, the professional monitoring service is basically the same. When your alarm is triggered, the system will contact the monitoring service via the connection you have (hard-wired, broadband, or cellular) and alert them. The staff will then call you on the contact numbers that you have provided. If they cannot reach you, they will contact the local police.

Self Monitored –
Un-Monitored

A self-monitored system is one where the alarm system will notify you directly, such as through your smartphone or tablet. These systems will use either landline, broadband or cellular technology for the connection to monitoring. Self-monitored systems offer many of the same features as a professionally monitored system but the onus of handling alarms is placed on you. If your alarm is triggered, these systems work by sending a text or email to your smartphone. Most of these systems also allow you to check in on them remotely and view the status of your home. This service may work well for you if you are easily reachable by phone and would rather call the police or a friend or neighbor to check in on your house without a third-party service involved.
